Antique Branded Boxwood Pharmaceutical Treenware Covered Glassware Box Holder

A delightful vary rare treen bottle case, English, Victorian. It may have originally housed a pharmaceutical glass bottle, the bell-shaped lid covering the bottle neck and stopper. The makers mark a pyrographed stamp to the top reading ” S.MAW SON & THOMPSON” inside a circle on the top hard to make out. Made of light-coloured wood, likely boxwood. With excellent proportions, grain and patina, this is a delightful piece of high quality treen. S. Maw and Son was a chemist based in the City of London from before 1850 to c.1940, well documented with objects in the collections of the Science Museum and the Wellcome Collection. Over the years it traded under slightly different names; “S. Maw, Son & Thompson” was used from 1870 to 1901. At this time the company was trading from 7-12 Aldersgate, just south of the current Barbican. An opportunity to get both an excellent treen collectable and a piece of London history! In excellent condition. Minor staining commensurate with age and contributing to the patina; some very minor age lines due to age and usage. See photographs as they form an integral part of the condition description. Dimensions 5″ high x 2 3/8 th” round at base..
