Item Tag: Vintage CHEMIST Display Bottle

The gold label reads TOOTHACHE ESS which stands for TOOTHACHE ESSENCE. This usually refers to clove oil containing eugenol, a natural numbing agent used for temporary pain relief and was applied directly once diluted.

Balsam Tincture is a pungent aromatic solution which was applied topically to prevent blisters to the skin. It was also used as a steam inhalation to relieve respiratory problems. The gold label reads TR: BALS:TOL which stands for BALSAM TINCTURE.

The gold label reads TR:CALUMB: which stands for Callumba Root Tincture (Jateorhiza palmata) and appears to have included an extraction from sugar beet, ethanol and water and was most likely used as a form of pain relief.

This pharmacy bottle has the desirable recessed label under the glass in gold, red and white which reads “AQUA ANETHI”. There would certainly have been a lot of dill water in this bottle! This pharmacy bottle will also make a lovely addition to a collection of similar pieces.
